Philip Anthony Yahner "Phil" (age 95) of Alexandria, Virginia peacefully left this world on Friday March 21, 2014. He was born on October 14, 1918 in St. Boniface, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Georgeanna Holt Yahner; daughter, Ellen Y. King and her husband Bill King; son, William E. Yahner and his wife Melissa Yahner; grandsons Jason P. King and wife Stacy; Andrew E. Yahner and wife Nancy; and great-granddaughters Georgeanna and Emily King.
A long time member of the Washington DC Bar Association Phil retired as Associate Solicitor, US Department of Labor in 1973 and had worked with various Congressional committees in drafting wage and hour legislation during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations.
In his forty plus years of retirement Phil loved to spend time with his family and friends and especially enjoyed his grandchildren and most recently his great- grand children. He loved traveling with his wife, tending to his large vegetable garden, playing bridge, reading, golfing and closely following Penn State football and Georgetown basketball.
Phil graduated from Patton High School in Patton, Pennsylvania, obtained his bachelor's degree from The George Washington University and received his law degree from Georgetown University Law School where he wrote for the Georgetown Law Review. Although always humble about his achievements, Phil was an outstanding student, both in college and law school, earning membership in various academic honor societies while working full time. He received outstanding service awards while employed at the Department of Labor and even in retirement he continued to write articles on labor law for various publications.
A resident of Alexandria for sixty -three years, Phil was an original member of Queen of Apostles Catholic Church where he served as Head Usher for many years and was a fixture at the 5:00 pm Saturday Mass.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on March 28, 2014 at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, 4329 Sano Street, Alexandria, Virginia. Entombment will follow at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to:
