Patricia Anne (Cawthon) Meeks Obituary

Pat (always Pat to all, never Patricia), passed away peacefully at Home surrounded by Family and her devoted Caretakers August 20, 2026 in Alexandria, Virginia. She was born August 12, 1925 in Mangum, Oklahoma, and lived to the amazing age of 101. Predeceased by her husband, Arthur Wayne Meeks, Sr. Pat is survived by her two sons, Dr. Arthur Wayne Meeks Jr. of Alexandria, VA, and Mr. David C. Meeks and his wife Ms. Kate Hinds of New Orleans, LA.

Pat grew up as the only child of Hiram and Agnes Cawthon in the small rural town of Mangum OK and witnessed the terrible impacts of The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Her family managed to come through these events, and Pat gained a lasting appreciation for the fragility of life coupled with a generous, compassionate heart for always helping others. After Graduating High School and a successful Semester at the University of Oklahoma in Norman OK, Pat returned home to Family in Mangum where she met her future husband, Wayne. They married 7 September 1946, then relocated to Altus OK for a short while, and later settled in Lawton OK. During their stay of over 20 years in Lawton highlighted by chasing two energetic young boys ensuring they grew up into strong young men, they were very active members of the First Methodist Church. Pat, as well as being a wonderful Mother and Wife also worked in the Church Office with a wide range of responsibilities many of them created by her fulfilling an unmet need she would recognize.

After the time in Lawton came a few years in Tulsa OK for her Husband Wayne’s Career and then a move back to Oklahoma City OK for his Career around 1977.   Oklahoma City became a beloved home to Pat and Wayne as did their new Church Family within Mayflower Church. Pat continued her focus on service to others by becoming a Certified Grief Counselor and later leading a group of counselors at a nearby Oklahoma City hospital. Many good years and lasting close friendships surviving to this day grew out of this time as they later enjoyed retirement together until the LORD called Wayne home unexpectedly in July 1999.

In 2002, Pat agreed to another adventurous relocation, this one taking her to live with her son, Wayne Jr., in Alexandria VA. So, at the age of 77 she sold her house, called the movers and made the biggest move so far with her beloved Kitty Cat Hannah. New surroundings didn’t slow her down; soon many new friends in Heritage Presbyterian Church began to fill in the losses from her life in Oklahoma City. In between creating new lifelong friendships, Hospital Volunteer work at Inova Mount Vernon and settling into her newest home, she traveled frequently to see her Son Dave and His Wife Kate both actively running their Restaurant in Austin Texas, or later establishing a successful Historical Landmark Bed and Breakfast in New Orleans Louisiana. She was also actively involved with women’s ministry at church as well as serving on a major pastoral search and selection effort. Her Volunteer Work at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital for over 10 years touched countless lives, comforting others, ensuring patients and staff alike smiled & laughed as was her way.

The last few years of her life were greatly enhanced and filled with love & care from Pat’s two dedicated care-givers, Muna Mohammed and Elen Itel. She adored them both and their loving care for Pat can not be over emphasized.
