  1. Dear Pam and Ann, I am so sorry for your loss. Prayers for you both and your families.

  2. May he rest in peace! I have so many memories of all the love during our Easter visits as well as any other time we visited!! Hugs to his family.

  3. My family and I spent many memorable 4th of July’s with Uncle "Mike" and his family. My children all remember these with love and joy. We will miss his wonderful chuckle and his kind and loving demeanor.

  4. Uncle Mike will always be in my heart. His sweet smile let me know he loved us dearly. I enjoyed talking about birds with him: he remembered our conversations and gave me a hummingbird feeder for my garden. Thank you, Uncle Mike. Love, April Howlett

  5. Uncle Mike will be truly missed. He will always be remembered for his wonderful smile and sweet demeanor! Some of my sweetest childhood memories are the special times my family spent with Uncle Mike and family for Easter. May he rest in peace.

  7. Lynn, Chris, Ann, Paul, and Pam: Our best to all of you during this difficult time. I have fond memories of Uncle Mike and his generous spirit when we were kids. I remember his great cookouts, burgers and dogs, and especially his July 4th fireworks displays! His kindness towards all of the Smith kids will not be forgotten.

  9. My deepest sympathy to the entire family. Mike was always so kind to my entire family and I will never forget that. Geri

  10. Mike was an outstanding leader, a fine mentor, and a good friend from our time together in the Chief’s Office of the U.S. Forest Service. He was very open, always honest, and an excellent team player on our shared work projects and activities. I cherish the memories of our times together, and wish his family the very best.

  11. Mike was a great boss. He kept us on our toes and did not let us make mistakes. He was a great engineering administrator. My sympathy goes out to all his family and his many friends.

  12. 1999 was time for cultural shock for the Howletts when daughter Christine first introduced a new friend from Uganda. To the friend, it was an opportunity to show some good manners. Excited to meet the parents, Joy knelt to great Mike as a fatherly figure as is cultural in the Ugandan norms. To Mike and Lynn this would be the most embarrassing moment knowing very well only men kneel to ask women for engagement. Mike thinking fast on his feet, let wife Lynn accept the formal greeting. Believing it respectful to refer to a good friend’s parents as mom and dad, Joy was at it again. In 2005, the new friend would introduce her children to the Howletts. At the time of his death, Mike and Lynn had hosted several birthdays for the Ugandan daughter and grand kids. It’s been all fun and everybody feels like family. Thank you for opening your heart and home to us. We will miss you always. Rest peacefully! Joy, Cathie & Collin
