Marcia Moellering Gundersheimer

marcia gundersheimer

October 6, 1930 ~ June 22, 2017

Marcia (Moellering) Gundersheimer was born on October 6, 1930 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Jean Lucille (Bollman) Moellering and Walter Suedhoff Moellering, whose family already included Marcia's brother John, then four years old. In June of 1950, she married Charles Robert Daugherty in Kalamazoo, Michigan; that marriage lasted twelve years and produced three children: Lynn, James and Stephen. She worked as a buyer for a women's clothing store in Kalamazoo before her first marriage, and in retail in the 1960s and '70s. From the early 1960's through the mid-'70's, Marcia met the challenges of being a financially struggling single parent with ingenuity and style. In 1976, Marcia married Robert Gundersheimer in Columbus, Ohio, and remained married to him until his death in 1990. After marrying Bob, Marcia discovered her talent for charitable fundraising, volunteering for the Temple Israel Sisterhood and the Cancer Ray in Columbus. She later organized fundraising for the Palmetto, Florida public library. In 1997, Marcia moved to Alexandria, Virginia, to be near her daughter, and lived in Alexandria until her passing. She is survived by her daughter Lynn McCreedy (David), sons Jim Daugherty (Cathy), Steve Daugherty, and Robert Gundersheimer (Michelle), as well as a stepdaughter Judith Amsel (Eric). Marcia also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, 2 stepgrandsons, and 7 great-grandchildren. Her brother John died in 2016.

Marcia was congenial, outgoing and enjoyed performing. She was a member of the Columbus Light Opera Company in the late 1940s, and met her first husband Chuck in the Kalamazoo Civic Players. She always had a flair for fashion and insisted on being well dressed well into her final illness. Marcia loved baseball, and was an active member of the Columbus Clippers Boosters while living in Columbus, and more recently has been a loyal fan of the Washington Nationals. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and cousin and a loyal friend to many. In the sixteen years she lived with Lynn McCreedy and family, Marcia became better known among the neighbors than the McCreedys, through stopping during her daily walks around the block, to introduce herself to neighbors she'd encounter. She also treasured her many friends from the St Martin de Porres Senior Center in Alexandria.

Memorial contributions in Marcia's name may be made to the St Martin de Porres Senior Center, 4650 Taney Ave, Alexandria, VA 22304, or to any worthy charity aiding military veterans.

  1. Always warm, never pretentious, as real as it get. She was married to my uncle Bob Gundersheimer.

  2. We were so sorry to hear of Marcia’s passing. We always enjoyed exchanging Christmas cards and catching up on the latest news. The last time that we were able to see Marcia was when Bob’s mother died. We enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner together in Florida and having Marcia with us was a comfort. We will miss her.

  3. Marcia was a fun cousin. However, I did not see her often, she kept in touch with me through Christmas cards. I’ll always remember that she met me at the airport when my father died in 1990.
