Linda Howard Mattingly

Linda Howard Mattingly, 78, died peacefully Thursday, September 8, 2016 in hospice care surrounded by her loving family. She had suffered a severe stroke on December 23, 2015. Linda was born January 18, 1938, into a Navy family, and grew up in Charleston, S.C., Annapolis, MD and Alexandria, VA. She attended Mary Washington College and graduated from the University of North Carolina. In 1965 Linda married Richard V. Mattingly, Jr., of Washington, D.C., and settled in McLean, VA. Linda was active in numerous civic, social, charitable and religious organizations, including the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, Children's Hospital, the Washington National Cathedral, the Junior League of Washington, Daughters of the Cincinnati, the Sulgrave Club, the Washington Winter Show and Gunston Hall. She served as administrator of Dumbarton House for 10 years. Linda was active for many years at St. John's Episcopal Church in McLean, serving variously as vestry member, altar guild member, and wedding coordinator. She was in charge of organizing numerous receptions for bishops' visitations, clergy farewells , funerals, and special occasions. Linda and her group of volunteers were known as the "helping hands". Linda leaves her husband of fifty-one years; two daughters, Elizabeth Goldsmith of Urbanna, VA and Patricia Montague of Alexandria, VA; four grandchildren; and a brother, James H. Howard of Gastonia, S.C. Linda was a charming, elegant and gracious lady. Her friendly, down-to-earth manner and unfailing consideration for others endeared her to many. She will be profoundly missed. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 6715 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA at 11:00 on Saturday, September 24, 2016, with a reception to follow.
