Hey, old man. It’s Rue. Miss you already. While you’re up there, can you put a word in the Big Man’s ear that we could use a rescue? Rest well, Ed. We’ll keep the jokes flowing.
Edward Wales Hart

Born in:
Washington, D.C.
Resided in:
Alexandria, Virginia
Edward Hart (73), artist, musician, builder, and lover of stray animals passed away in Alexandria on March 11, 2026. Born in Washington, DC, on March 2, 1953, Edward had a quirky, lateral-thinking creative mind. He fulminated about the thinning ozone layer, polluted local waterways, and the dangers of the herbicide Roundup – decades before any of us thought about such assaults on our planet.
A life-long resident of Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia, Edward attended Washington-Lee High School, Goddard College, and Corcoran Art School. He could paint scenes from his vivid dreams as easily as he captured on canvas the sail boats along Cape Cod shores, where he spent summers fishing and caught plenty of seaweed.
He could play any instrument put in his hands and recreate any song, note by note, that he heard on the radio. With the same boundless creativity, he could build graceful furniture and fix homes, old and new.
He had a special bond with rescue dogs, who seemed to recognize in him a kindred spirit. He never hesitated to share that last scrumptious bite of his daily breakfast sandwich, with Buddy, a rescue dog he lived with along with his sister, Sue.
With a dry wit, hearty laugh, and a love of hot coffee (or cold, or even a couple of days old), Edward was a man who did not demand much in life. He was private but had a caring, active and liberal online community where he fought the good fight for his political and social causes. He was profoundly affected by his teenage Outward Bound trip west, particularly moved by Havasu Canyon in Arizona.
He loved his Washington football and baseball teams in all their incarnations. He was always current on the back-stories of local newscasters and deeply interested in national and global events.
Edward leaves behind his sisters Susan Hart and Cherie Hart (John Bleho), and nieces Casey Hart Bleho (Trevor Criswell) and Kaela Byrnes Bleho (David Bell) He was predeceased by his parents Edward Hart and Virginia Sheahan Hart.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your favorite environmental organization or animal rescue in Edward’s honor.
