Susan Lynch McCormick, 72, passed away on June 13, 2025, in Alexandria, Virginia, with her family by her side. Per her request, she was cremated and no public services were held.

Susan was born on July 6, 1952, in Phillipsburg, NJ to Richard J. and Arlene (Miller) Lynch. She grew up in Phillipsburg and graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1970. From 1970 to 1976 she attended East Stroudsburg State College (now East Stroudsburg University), receiving both a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Education. In 1987, she married Douglas McCormick in Alexandria, VA and they adopted a son, Thomas, from Russia in 1992.

Though trained to be a teacher, she spent most of her working life as a freelance editor and editing the publications of various associations. In the last few years of her career, she did administrative work for an audiology firm in Alexandria. Susan had a passion for cooking, especially baking, and was a voracious reader, accumulating a large collection of books covering a wide range of interests. She also loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. Along with Doug and Thom, Susan traveled extensively, visiting a number of European countries, as well as Canada and various spots in the United States. In addition to love of family, she derived great joy from her relationships with close friends scattered about the US. She had a keen interest in all aspects of their lives, whether it be sharing recipes, discussing books, or sharing the ups and downs that life has to offer.

In addition to her husband and son in Alexandria, Susan is survived by her father in New Jersey. She was predeceased by her mother in 2013 and her brother Tim in 1998.

  1. Dear Doug and Tommy, My thoughts and prayers are with you both.
    Dan Lynch’s daughter
    Rachelle Lynch Storm

  2. I worked with Susan at ASTC for one year, 1985-86, and we became good friends. We used to go to afternoon tea, share books, swap “mom” stories, and I enthusiastically ate her many baked goods. We stayed in touch after I left DC in 1989, and I visited her, Doug and Thom a few times over the years. I came to consider Susan one of my closest friends. I dearly miss her; she will always be in my heart.

  3. Dear Doug and Thom. I became reacquainted with Susie two years ago through texting. i admired her so much, we had
so many interesting conversations. She was my hero. Her grace and fortitude was astounding.
    Miss you very much.

    Your cousin
