Robert Allison Dunn, age 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 3, 2025, in his home in Alexandria, VA. He was born on November 19, 1938, in Sunderland, England, the son of the late Herbert and Marjorie Dunn.

Robert is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ana Victoria; his son and daughter-in-law, Sebastian and Sarah; his daughter and grandchildren, Samantha, Dharma, Rive, and Posy; his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, Jessica, Doug, Maret, and James; his daughter and son-in-law, Alexandra and John; and his sister and brother-in-law, Judith and Colin.

Robert studied at the London School of Economics, where he earned a Bachelor in Economics. After that, he studied at the University of Alberta in Canada, where he earned a Masters of Arts in Economics. Robert also held a PhD. Before moving to the United States, Robert was an Economics Professor in Canada. In 1972, Robert moved to the U.S. and joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he worked as a Senior Economist for many years until retiring.

Throughout his career at the IMF, Robert achieved many professional accomplishments and was able to remedy complex financial problems. Due to his involvement with the revamping of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), Robert’s thesis, which was completed in 1989, was focused on the evolution of SDRs from 1970 until 1988. Additionally, from 1982 until 1985, Robert served as a Director on the Board Directors of the Bank-Fund Staff Federal Credit Union, where he also served as the Vice-Chairman of the Board’s Finance Committee (1982-85) and as the Treasurer (1984-85). Furthermore, Robert shared his expertise in economics with various central banks in Asia, Middle East, and South America. After retirement at the IMF, Robert worked at Dean Witter as a Financial Advisor for several years.

Robert was a crossword puzzle expert and a bridge master. He avidly enjoyed trivia and history. In his younger years, he was a soccer player and a cricketer. Robert was a car enthusiast and a collector of pens, model trains, watches, and cameras throughout his life. Robert considered himself a modern day Renaissance man.

Per Robert’s wishes, there will be no funeral service or celebration of life. Instead, per his request, Robert’s ashes will be scattered off the coast of Sunderland and off the coast of Colonial Beach, two places close to Robert’s heart.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization that was special to Robert.
