Mary Phillips, age 93, of Alexandria, VA died on September 25, 2013 at Alexandria Hospital. She was a resident of Mt. Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Cemter. She was born on November 19, 1919 in Youngstown, OH to the late Peter and Ljubica Milasnovich.
Mary was a member of St. Mark Orthodox Church, Youngstown, OH and St. Luke Orthodox Church, McLean, VA. She belonged to the Workers of St. Basil the Great and the Eastern Orthodox Women's Society, where she was named 1980 Orthodox Woman of the Year. She was most well known for her role as Sunshine Secretary where she had just the right words to say in greeting cards to members and friends for sad or happy occasions.
Mary was a lover of a wide variety of sacred and secular music, ranging from Orthodox liturgical music, Gregorian chant and Southern Gospel to classical opera and folk music from around the world. She enjoyed vocal and choral music the most, herself being a soprano still singing in the church choir until late in 2009.
Singing with her church choir was how she met her husband, Edward, at a Serbian Orthodox choral festival in 1940. They married on May 10, 1941.
Mary's life revolved around her family and church life.

Karabin, proud grandmother of Melanie Mays, Christina Mays Hyde and her husband Charles, Alex Mays and his wife Dawn Marie, James M. Karabin and his wife Michele, Melissa Barry and her husband Nathan, great-grandmother of Mackenzie and Hannah Mays, Skyler Hyde, Rachel and Rebecca Karabin, Katherine and James Barry, sister of the late Milan Milasnovich, Rose Milosevich and Nick Milasnovich, also survived by several nieces, nephews and godchildren.
