Marguerite Alice Diggs

marguerite diggs
Marguerite Alice Diggs was born on August 7, 1942 in Camden, New Jersey--the eldest child born to the late William and Corrine Griggs. She passed away on January 7, 2018 at the age of 75.

Marguerite wedded Air Force veteran, Acie Thomas Slade, Jr. on April 27th, 1963a"a marriage that produced two children, Crystal Mai-Ling and Acie Thomas III. She worked for the Philadelphia public schools system for ten years at Olney high school where students affectionately called her 'Mom'.

Six years after Acie Jr's death in 1978, Marguerite married Army veteran, Charles Edward Diggs Jr. on June 21st, 1984, and the family relocated to the Washington D.C. suburb of Herndon, Virginia. Shortly after the family's arrival they met neighbors Roy and Kay Hayes with whom Marguerite would be a close friend for the rest of her life.

With a skillful eye and steady hand, Marguerite was very much a "do-it-yourselfer" around the house. Outside, during the warmer months, Marguerite loved tending to her eloquent garden filled with pink roses, bearded irises and purple cyclamen.

In her later years, Marguerite traveled as much as she could to include a cruise to The Bahamas, two Soul Train cruises, and a Disney World/Epcot Center vacationa"her fourth visit to the "Magic Kingdom"a"to satisfy her inner-child.

Always the "news junkie", Marguerite would often give you her political opinion on an issue, whether you asked for it or not. On the music front, she enjoyed Count Basie, The Spinners, Lou Rawls, Luther Vandross, Earth Wind & Fire, and Lord knows, she really, really, loved herself some Patti Labelle. And if you didn't know, she had every movie ever produced on DVD in the history of American cinema.

Marguerite is survived by her daughter, Crystal Mai-Ling Graybeal; son, Acie Thomas Slade; grandson, Xander, two step-sons, Brian and Christopher Diggs; step-daughter, Cedra Crenshaw, son-in-law, Keith Graybeal; daughter-in-law, Diana Carvajal; three sisters, Doreen Edmonds, Rhonda Cherry and Linda Griggs; two brothers, Dennis Griggs and Sherman Griggs; sister-in-law Robin Griggs, brothers-in-law, Lynwood Edmonds and Charles Cherry; cousin and long-time friend, Sonja Parham; and several nieces and nephews.

  1. I’m so sorry for your recent loss. My deepest condolences to your family. Death of a loved one is always hard to endure, but you don’t have to go through it alone. You can always find comfort in our God of tender mercy Jehovah, as found at 2 Corinthians 1:3,4.

  2. I will miss my BFF and partying partner of the past 30 years. Marguerite, you were a gem. Sheldon and I hold you in our hearts forever. Rest in peace!

  3. Marguerite was such a sweet and special soul, our condolences go out to the family. She will always hold a special place in my heart. She made me laugh and gave me great advice. She will be missed, I look forward to seeing her on the other side. Much love.

  4. Marguerite was my neighbor and friend. She was a great cook and gardner. She had the nicest garden in the neighborhood! She was a wonderful person and I will miss her. RIP
