George McClung Gill

George M. Gill, MD, 92, of Alexandria, Virginia, died on September 21, 2025. Raised in suburban Philadelphia, he was a graduate of Upper Darby High School, ’50; Dickinson College, ’54; and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, ’58.

A pediatric oncologist, Dr. Gill had a long career in clinical practice, teaching, and cancer research. After completion of his pediatric training, he served two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He then trained in oncology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and subsequently served on the staff of the Jimmy Fund Clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital, and as Chief of Oncology at the Newark NJ Children’s Hospital. He was the first pediatric oncologist to practice in the state of New Jersey, and the first medical director of the Valerie Fund Children’s Cancer Clinic in suburban New Jersey. Dr. Gill served on the faculty of the medical schools at the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, and the Cornell/ Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

From 1968 until his retirement in 2018, Dr. Gill had a 50-year career in cancer and AIDS research in the pharma/biotech industry at Hoffmann-LaRoche, Bristol Myers, Ligand, and Oncolytics. He played a major role in the clinical development and FDA approval of eleven anti-cancer agents, the second approved AIDS drug, and three other infectious disease agents. He authored or co-authored more than 20 scientific publications.

He is survived by his wife, Karyn; children, Elizabeth, Christopher, Evan, and Alexander; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
