Carolyn Falk

carolyn falk

Carolyn Falk, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died April 2, 2023, in Springfield, VA. She was born in New York City on September 2, 1927, to the late Abraham and Esther (Gordon) Verber.

After graduating from the University of Vermont, Carol worked at a book publisher before marrying James Falk, her husband of 70 years. They moved to Morristown, NJ, where they raised three children while Jim worked as a patent attorney at Bell Laboratories. As the children grew, Carol began a career at the Morris County Welfare Department, retiring as a supervisor after 20 years. She was also an active volunteer and board member of Literacy Volunteers of America, Morris County.

Carol’s deepest love was family. For decades Thanksgiving in Morristown was food, touch football, knock hockey, and lots of silliness. The grandchildren were her joy. Carol and Jim entertained them many summer weeks at the cabin in Bridgton, ME, with swimming, kayaking, minigolf, and learning the apparently mutable rules of klabyasch. Carol was absolutely thrilled with her three great-grandchildren, and even in her last weeks insisted on hearing their latest amazing exploits.

Carol was predeceased by her parents, her brother Carl Verber, her beloved husband Jim, and her daughter-in-law Donna Lucas. She is survived by her children Jonathan (Laura Levenson), Ken, and Alice, a steady and steadying presence since the move to Virginia in 2010, along with grandchildren Joshua (Kate) and Seth (Lauren) Lucas-Falk and Annie (Avery Ziebell) and Eli (Amanda Mason) Levenson-Falk, three great-grandchildren, friends, and extended family.

Per Carol’s instructions there will be no funeral. Donations in her memory may be made to LVA Morris County (https://www.lvmorris.org/donate-3/) or the homeless shelter of your choice.

Guestbook

  1. Carol was a leading light for Literacy Volunteers of Morris County for many years, and her energy, compassion and intelligence were a true gift. She never forgot us even after she moved from NJ. It was a joy and honor to know her and I will miss her terribly. May her memory be a blessing.

  2. Even though I barely knew Carolyn, I have heard stories, and I know that she was a beacon and guide for her children and their progeny. May they be comforted.
