Betty Jean Newel Wallace passed away at her home in Alexandria, VA on July 29, 2025. Betty was born on September 30, 1931 in Indianapolis to Robert and Wanetta Newel. They moved to Washington, D.C. when she was 5. She graduated from Eastern High School and George Washington University. She was predeceased by her loving husband Robert B. Wallace in 2022.
Throughout her life, Betty was a source of unwavering love, strength and guidance to her family and friends. She married Bob on August 28, 1955. They met at age 16 at Colonial Beach, VA. Together they raised 3 children, Robert B. Wallace, Jr., Anne Sprague and Barbara Schwartz (Paul) who will forever be grateful for her love and support.
After the wedding, she moved to New York and worked at the Rockefeller Foundation while Bob finished his residency. Once she had her children, she became a full-time homemaker. They raised their family in Rochester, MN where she became an active volunteer both in the community and at church. She continued that same commitment after their move to McLean, VA in 1979. They spent the last 10 years enjoying a loving community at Goodwin House, Alexandria, VA.
She had a passion for tennis, golf, art, bridge, flowers and her family. In addition to her children, she is survived by Tyler and Kate Wallace, Charles and Ellie Sprague, Maggie Schwartz Wilson (Delaney) and Jack Schwartz as well as many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 6715 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA.
