Richard Petkoff was born in Charlottesville, VA on April 7, 1956. He died unexpectedly at Sibley Hospital on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. He was surrounded by his family. As a final act of kindness, he gave the gift of life by organ donation. He was a man who cherished each day he had on this earth, celebrating it with love and compassion for others.

Richard retired from PEPCO after 33 years in 2013 as a senior transmission engineer. He was a licensed Professional Engineer. Since retiring from PEPCO, he worked as a Senior Transmission Engineer for TRC and most recently SEKo. Richard graduated Virginia Tech in 1979.

He is survived by his life partner Evelyn Suarez; his son Harry (Kelsi); his grandson Henry; his siblings Genelle Parra of Texas, Gregory Petkoff (Mary) of Ohio, and Susan Carter of Virginia and niece and nephews: Allison, Daniel (Natalie), Carl, Ryan and Jason.

He was preceded in death by his lovely daughter Lydia and niece Sarah Carter, his sister Ellen Smith and parents Leonard and Marian Petkoff.

A service celebrating Richard’s life will be held on June 8 at 2PM at St Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 4700 Whitehaven Pkwy, NW, Washington, DC to be followed by a gathering at the church to remember Richard.

In lieu of flowers, we welcome donations to your choice of the National Kidney Foundation, the ALS Foundation or National Public Radio.
