Resided in: Alexandria, Virginia

Sara Leigh Carrier died on March 22, 2025 in Alexandria, Virginia.  Sara is survived by her daughter Laura Lee Powers and husband Joe, son Larry Evan Carrier and former wife Amy; sister Marilyn Galloway, and grandchildren – Jackson Connor Powers, Emily Katherine Powers, Benjamin Elledge Carrier, and Ryan Anderson Carrier.

Sara was born on November 9, 1940 in Rockford, Illinois to David and Mildred Anderson.  Sara “flew the coop” after high school for the adventure and promise of sunny Southern California where she soon met Don.  Sara married Don Frederick Carrier on June 25, 1960 in Rockford, Illinois.

After working to support Don through undergraduate and graduate school in Southern California, the Carriers -now with Laura and Larry in tow – moved from Claremont, California to Austin, Texas in the late 70s.

Sara was a spirited homemaker and active in the local Austin community. She was wholly devoted to her family, especially engaged in Laura and Larry’s school, sports, arts, and other activities.  Sara was also a self-made real estate entrepreneur managing and maintaining her own rental properties throughout Austin.  Anything Sara did, she did with all her energy and commitment. She orchestrated large parties and gatherings throughout the years creating cherished memories for all who attended.  A selfless soul, she cared for others deeply.

After successfully launching Laura and Larry into adulthood, Don and Sara relocated to Reno, Nevada until his retirement in 2000.  Later, they moved to Central Florida where they embraced the warm weather and vibrant retirement community.

Sara and Don traveled the world over and had a sincere enthusiasm for different cultures, art, and music.  She loved to dance and sing, demonstrating an impassioned zest for life. Always upbeat and happy, she met life’s challenges with unwavering positivity.

Her guiding mantra was: “If you can be one thing in life, be kind.” She lived this philosophy daily, instilling it in her children and grandchildren through her words and actions.

A Celebration of Life service for Sara is planned for early Summer 2025 in Austin, Texas. Please email chicpowers55@comcast.net if you would like to get more information or contact the family.
