Henry P. Merrick

Henry P. Merrick, age 93, of Ashburn, VA, formerly a long time resident of Wheaton, IL, died on July 25, 2013 at Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center, Arlington, VA. He was born on January 16, 1920 to the late Patrick and Katherine Pickett Merrick.
Henry was born and raised in Bridegwater, Massachusetts and later moved to Manhasset, NY and attended Great Neck High School. After high school he attended the original DeVry Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois before being hired by Western Electric. Henry served in the US Army Signal Core during World War II, both in Europe and in the Philippines, obtaining the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1946. Returning to Western Electric after the War, Henry continued his career and education in telecommunications. Henry attended evening classes at Rutgers University, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in 1961. One of the many highlights of Henry's career was working on the various types of telecommunications switching systems developed by Bell Labs, supervising the installation and maintenance of those systems across the United States. Henry retired as a Department Chief of Engineering with 44 years of service. In his spare time, Henry piloted his own plane and loved to golf and played through the age of 92.
Henry was the beloved husband of Catherine "Katy"Merrick, loving and devoted father of Patrick Merrick and his wife Rita, proud grandfather of Matthew and Christopher Merrick.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Wednesday, July 31st at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, 21370 St. Theresa Lane, Ashburn, VA. Inurnment with military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
